Faulty furnace exhaust vents … The rest of the story

In early 1995, the Department of Consumer and Commerce (MCC) is a program to replace up to 20,000 mid-oven gas yield in Ontario known because their plastic drains were exposed, failure, and carbon monoxide can leak into the house. Other sources said the number could be as high as 40,000 – but no one knows.

The core of the problem is, is that no other type of vent pipe had been approved for use with medium-efficiency furnaces.

Hundredsdesigned by homeowners to sue the government, manufacturers and others for refusing to fully substitute for the payment. At this point the owner over $ 1,000 of the estimated cost of $ 1500 would pay for the replacement furnace for high-performance models that would prejudice the safe operation with plastic exhaust pipes are currently available. The house builder was to pay $ 200 to $ 200 and $ ONHWP gas to 100

At the end of 1995 or the GovernmentOntario approves the faulty vents or the producers had made no contribution to the cost of replacement in private households and businesses. But the government is not a substitute for the Government to pay funded nonprofit and cooperative housing.

And it seems that the program offers nothing for those who have already announced their stoves replaced before mid-effectiveness of this program.

On September 12, 1995, the Department of Consumer and Commercial Relations has a publishedSafety Order requires that all owners of heating vents in high-temperature plastic for these systems from 31 August 1996 resolved. Gas utilities and propane suppliers were required by Ontario law to terminate the supply of fuel to aircraft that were not corrected in time. Fix the defective part was vent vent with an approved alternative, if replaced at all, or the replacement of the heater together.

Two producers of openings in Toronto, arguesthey were safe, in place of openings effect (a special grade corrosion resistant stainless steel) that the problem with the way the average yield would solve. This pipe replacement not yet received approval, and for some replacement furnaces were never approved. A manufacturer has asked the Office of the Prime Minister to dedicate a portion of the millions ear marked to be financed by the Government Housing ovens to speed the testing and certification of pipe replacement. Upgrading the exhaust lineAgencies have a cost of just over $ 400 per house.

At least in theory, all affected furnaces should have been re-adjusted or replaced, 31 August 1996.

However, have a private home inspectors have been finding some of these heating systems still in service with the original hi temp plastic drains are still in force, at least until the summer of 1997. It is entirely possible that some still exist. Homeowners should carefully labeled for the exhaust vents in plasticSel-Vent or PlexVent UltraVent. (Vents or other than those in use in high-fired boilers, which will be labeled ABS, PVC or CPVC, and are acceptable)

A licensed gas-fitter/installer should be consulted, even though a mid-efficiency furnace, and you are not sure it can enter the sewer.

All owners of hot gas should be CO (carbon monoxide) have detectors in use and have their equipment is regularly checked.
